When we dig out a failed drive, we nearly always find the same thing: lots of sand and not enough hardcore. Here's how we build yours instead.

Step 1 · Before we quote
Site survey
We check access, levels, drainage and the ground in person before we price anything.

Step 2 · Day one to two
Excavation
We lift the old surface and dig down to the depth your base needs, and take the spoil away.

Step 3 · Foundation
150–200mm of MOT Type 1
Laid and compacted in layers. How deep we go depends on the ground, which we check at the survey. This is the part cheap drives skimp on, and it's why they sink.

Concrete edge restraints
Haunched in concrete so the blocks can't creep, spread or move at the edges over time.

Step 5 · Bedding
40mm sharp sand bedding
Screeded flat so every block sits true. The sand is only there to bed the blocks, not to make up levels.

Laying the blocks
Cut and laid by hand in the pattern you've chosen: herringbone, basketweave or stretcher bond.

Compaction & kiln-dried jointing sand
Vibrated tight and brushed full of kiln-dried sand to lock everything in.

How much does a monoblock driveway cost in Glasgow?

Is monoblock the same as block paving?
Near enough. In Scotland, monoblock is what most people call a block paved drive. Strictly it means the standard rectangular concrete block, about 200mm × 100mm. Tumbled blocks like Tegula are block paving too, just with a rougher, cobble-style finish. Monoblock vs smooth block vs Tegula →
Why monoblock rather than tarmac or concrete?
The blocks sit on a sand bed rather than in one solid slab, so a bit of ground movement won't crack the drive, and a stained or damaged block can be lifted out and replaced on its own. Do I need planning permission for a monoblock driveway?
Usually not for the drive itself. In Scotland, a drive between your house and the road is permitted development as long as it's permeable or drains onto a permeable area within your property, not onto the road, and we design the drainage that way. There's no 5m² limit in Scotland; that rule is for England. Conservation areas, listed buildings and flats are different, and a new dropped kerb always needs the council's approval. How long does installation take?
About a week for a typical drive. A small single-car drive can be done in a couple of days, and a big drive with level changes or a lot of drainage can take up to three weeks. Your quote tells you how long yours will take.
What maintenance does it need?
Very little. Sweep it when the leaves come down, give it the odd jet wash, and top up the kiln-dried jointing sand every two or three years. Sealing is optional but helps the colour last. Cleaning and maintenance guide →
Can you match existing blocks?
Usually, yes. We'll bring samples to your property to find the closest match for extensions or repairs. If a perfect match isn't possible, we'll tell you straight.
What's the difference between Tegula and standard monoblock?
Standard monoblock is the smooth, regular block most people picture. Tegula is tumbled, with a weathered, cobble-style finish that suits traditional homes and hides tyre marks and dirt well. Both are concrete block paving laid the same way, so it comes down to the look and the budget.
What's the difference between concrete and clay blocks?
Clay blocks hold their colour longer because the colour goes all the way through, but they cost more. Concrete blocks are better value and come in a wider range of colours and finishes.
Will you damage my garden or borders?
We protect surrounding areas with boards and sheets, and we walk the site with you before and after. If we accidentally damage anything, we put it right at our cost.
