Why block paving

The smartest long-term driveway choice in the UK.

Tarmac cracks. Concrete stains. Loose gravel scatters. Block paving — done properly — outperforms all of them and looks better doing it.

Built to last 20+ years

Properly installed block paving outlasts tarmac, concrete and slabs in Scottish weather — without cracking.

Repairable in place

Damage a block? Lift it out and swap in a new one. No ugly patches, no full rip-up.

Adds property value

A quality block-paved driveway can add up to 10% to a property's kerb value — and looks the part for resale.

Permeable options

SUDS-compliant permeable paving lets rainwater drain naturally — no planning permission required.

Easy to maintain

A sweep, an occasional jet wash and a top-up of joint sand every couple of years. That's it.

Hundreds of design options

Concrete, clay or natural stone effect. Herringbone, basketweave, stretcher bond — your pick.

Our 8-step install

Where the corners get cut — and where we don't.

Most driveway failures come from one of three things: a thin sub-base, no edge restraints, or skipped compaction. Here's exactly how we build yours.

  1. 1

    Step 1 · Day one

    Site survey

We assess access, levels, drainage and ground conditions in person before we put pen to paper.

  2. 2

Step 2 · Day one to two

    Excavation

We strip the existing surface and dig down to the depth your sub-base needs — no shortcuts.

  3. 3

    Step 3 · Foundation

    150–200mm MOT Type 1 sub-base

Properly compacted in layers. This is the bit cheap installers skimp on — it's why their drives sink.

  4. 4

    Step 4 · Edges

    Concrete edge restraints

Haunched in concrete so the blocks can't creep, spread or move at the edges over time.

  5. 5

    Step 5 · Bedding

    40mm sharp sand bedding

Screeded flat to give every block a true, even base to sit on.

  6. 6

    Step 6 · Laying

    Precision block laying

Cut and laid by hand in your chosen pattern — herringbone, basketweave or stretcher bond.

  7. 7

    Step 7 · Locking

    Compaction & kiln-dried jointing sand

Vibrated tight and brushed full of kiln-dried sand to lock everything in.

  8. 8

    Step 8 · Handover

    Cleanup, walk-around & guarantee

Site cleared, surface swept, walk-around with you, and your 5-year workmanship guarantee in writing.

Frequently asked

Honest answers, no upsells.

Do I need planning permission for a block paving driveway?
If your driveway is over 5m² and drains onto a public highway, yes — unless you use permeable paving, which is exempt. We'll advise on the right solution at the site visit.
How long does installation take?
Most standard driveways take 3–5 working days from excavation to completion. Larger or more complex projects (full sweeping drives, retaining walls, drainage works) may take a week or two.
What maintenance is required?
Very little. A sweep when leaves fall, an occasional jet wash, and we recommend topping up the kiln-dried jointing sand every 2–3 years. Sealing is optional but extends the life and colour.
Can you match existing blocks?
Usually yes — we'll bring samples to your property to find the closest match for extensions or repairs. If a perfect match isn't possible we'll tell you straight.
What's the difference between concrete and clay blocks?
Clay blocks hold their colour longer (the colour goes all the way through), but cost more. Concrete blocks are excellent value and come in a wider range of colours and finishes.
Will you damage my existing garden or borders?
We protect surrounding areas with boards and sheets, and we always walk the site with you before and after. Anything we accidentally affect, we put right at our cost.
